About Our Chapter |
|
CMENC is an organization for college students who are studying to become music teachers: general music, choral, instrumental--band or strings. This national organization has 15,412 undergraduate music education student members from 664 chapters in the U.S. and abroad. Our chapter not only works to fill the curriculum gaps in the teaching methods classes, but it is here to provide both instrumental and vocal music education students with opportunities to make connections and have experiences outside the university by exchanging ideas, collaborating on projects, and making important professional connections.
Last semester, our chapter of CMENC hosted numerous clinics for all NAU music education students because we feel it is important to educate in areas not always covered in the classroom. The clinicians varied from out-of-town speakers to faculty within our community. These clinics gave a more intimate setting, encouraging students to be more interactive and ask questions during the sessions.
To kick off the semester, September included a “Body Mapping” session by Professor David Vining to inform on proper body posture while performing. October brought along three clinics, beginning with a “Jazz Pedagogy” session by Dr. Joel DiBartolo. The other two events in October were the highlights of the semester, the first being a trip to the Phoenix area for the chapter to attend a state-wide Orff workshop, to give a teaching method for any aspiring general music teachers. The last clinic of the month was a two-day session by Phoenician Bruce Pearson, the author of the Standard of Excellence method books, with sessions titled, “Music Advocacy for your Program,” “Principles of Expressive Playing,” and “More Great Beginnings.” With advertising, this clinic drew out-of-town attendance from music teachers around the entire state.
This semester brings a new series of clinics, including “Instrumental Repair”, “Drill Designing,” “Vocal Jazz Pedagogy” (the second half of the original clinic), “The Differences Between Choral and Instrumental Teaching,” “The First Few Years,” and two more trips to Phoenix for Orff workshops. All of these clinics have been successful so far, with attendance from both members and non-members, and we hope to see these continue in the semesters to come. |
